Let's talk about our spotlight ingredient: Coconut oil

From being offered to deities prior to the start of an auspicious occasion or a new venture, in wedding rituals or as an energy drink to being used as a flavoring agent in South Indian curries to innumerable skin and hair applications, coconut oil is the most versatile ingredient in the Indian botanical repertoire. Even the husk or coir, a useful source of fiber is widely utilized in making mats, brushes and mattresses.  

Coconut oil extracted from the tender white meat of the nut is saturated with lauric acid (a type of saturated fat), which according to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science*, due to its low molecular weight has a rare ability to penetrate inside the hair shaft and, in turn, repair damaged hair. Additional findings from this study confirmed that treatment with coconut oil may help to reduce the loss of protein from hair which may be damaged by chemical styling products and processes.

From the northernmost to the southernmost parts of India, coconut oil is touted for all hair types and is widely favored as a moisture-boosting hair treatment.

What are some other ways in which you can integrate coconut oil in your daily life?

Try using coconut oil on a cotton pad as a makeup remover or apply generously as a balm for chapped lips. You may never go back to buying a chemically loaded makeup cleanser again.

Use it as a treatment of wounds, burns, and dermatitis. It also acts as sunblock, and as a moisturizer and the only ingredient in it is the one you can see and pronounce - coconut oil.

If you haven't tried sauteing kale, mushrooms, onions and garlic with a dash of salt and pepper in coconut oil, you are missing out on big, buttery, rustic flavors that are delightful to the taste buds and good for your heart health. Eat as a side or roll it up in  tortilla, coconut oil for cooking will not disappoint. 

Coconut oil aids in burning fat, so you may even lose some weight! Now that's a win-win situation!

And as any natural product goes, opting for virgin coconut oil instead of refined versions. is recommended. When storing coconut oil, keep it at room temperature and away from moisture for best results.
